Kate Huling of Marlow Goods on Her Standout Style
When this ultra-resourceful designer started her line, Marlow Goods, 10 years ago, she went in whole-hog, so to speak. Half of the couple (with husband Andrew Tarlow) behind Brooklyn locavore hot spots like Diner and the Wyeth Hotel, Huling decided to fill a need for locally-sourced leather goods. She began coaxing colorful bags, shoes, and apparel out of hides from animals used in Tarlow’s restaurants that would otherwise be turned into chemical solvents, shipped overseas, or thrown away. Huling also designs comfy, tailored organic cotton clothing, that, like her leather line, is timeless yet bold. Her own wardrobe is a clear guide: “I like to stand out,” says the mother of four. “I like to feel strong, agile, and stable.”
